2- Migration requirements

Foreign personnel cannot develop working activity in Uruguay nor be registered in the payroll of a local company without being legally authorized to work in the country, whether in a provisory or definitive way. Since work permits as such do not exist in our country, foreigners who want to work in Uruguay must acquire residence authorization.

In order to obtain the certificate required, the person will have to process one of the different type of residence procedures provided by our law. It is necessary to consider the expected time the person will remain in Uruguay to determine which the appropriate procedure to apply is.The different types of procedures which can be initiated at the Migrations office are the following:

1. Temporary Sheet of Identity (Hoja Provisoria de Identidad): applicable to foreign workers who will work in Uruguay for less than 180 days. This authorization is not renewable. Once it expires a different procedure must be initiated.
