Durazno was founded by the Portuguese in October 12, 1821 by the name of Villa San Pedro del Durazno, in honor to the Brazilian emperor Pedro I of Brasil and IV of Portugal. General Fructuoso Rivera, first constitutional president of Uruguay, made Durazno the national capital in 1834 and changed residency to the center of the country’s territory.
In railway’s beginnings Durazno received immigrants from various origins and made it more important for the country. However, only just in June 1906 Villa San Pedro del Durazno was upgraded to the category of a city by a government’s decree.
It is located on the geographical center of Uruguay, in a productive agricultural and livestock area and in the junction of important national roads. Durazno is the capital city of the Department by the same name and has 40,000 inhabitants.
